Antonio Salieri: Forgotten or Forgettable? Jessica Michelle
Hunter
Antonio Salieri was a popular composer during the Classical Era, but his music is rarely performed today. With the 1984 release of the move Amadeus about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Salieri’s interaction with him, the world was reintroduced to Salieri’s music. Now the world knows Mozart and his music, but during his lifetime, it was Salieri who was considered the successful composer and was more of a household name. This is not the case as we begin the 21st century. One rarely hears Salieri’s music on the classical radio stations or played at concerts by orchestras. Since Amadeus brought Salieri’s name back into the light twenty years ago, why hasn’t there been a greater interest in Salieri and his music? Was Salieri a better composer than history has, to date, given him credit for? Is Salieri a forgotten composer or just forgettable? This distinction project suggests some contributing factors that figure into the above questions using as support bibliographical research and analysis of selected compositions of Salieri and other better-known composers from the Classical period.
