Lab Manual: Chemical Principles In
the Laboratory, 7th ed., by Slowinski,
Wolsey & Masterton
Attendance: Class attendance is mandatory. All absences will be
dealt with according to the Student & Academic Handbook. Take note that an
absence in laboratory is treated like a lecture absence. Students with an
exemplary attendance record may be eligible for a bonus at the end of the
semester. Three cumulative unexcused tardies during
any one semester will result in 2% being deducted from the student’s overall
average for that semester.
Assignments: Assignments include Homework, Quizzes, Laboratory
Reports, Exams and a Semester Final Exam. All assignments will be graded
according to four criteria: 1) completeness, 2) correctness, 3) neatness and 4)
timeliness. Homework and Lab Reports should ALWAYS be turned in. Late
assignments however will be penalized 15% the 1st day, 25% the 2nd day and after
that they will NOT be accepted. At the instructor’s discretion, a student may
be asked to redo an assignment. It is MANDATORY
to show all work on each assignment to obtain full credit. It is also
recommended that the student save all graded assignments to substantiate any
claims of grading errors.
Makeup: An assignment missed due to an excused absence may be
made up, those that are due to unexcused absences may
not be made up. It is the responsibility of the student to determine what assignment(s) was
missed and to complete it within 2 class periods. The instructor reserves the
right to assign an alternate form of makeup work.
Re-tests: A maximum of 2 Re-tests will be allowed over the course of the
semester for any 2 exams taken in-class. Each Retest taken will be averaged with its
respective in-class exam. Upon return of the graded in-class exam, a student
must take their Retest during the instructor’s next available evening study. A
Retest is not allowable on a Make-up exam. Students who do not use any of their
Re-tests will be eligible for BONUS
at the end of the semester.
Grading scale: 100 - 90% A Composition of 20%
of Homework Average
89 - 80% B overall grade: 20% of Quiz Average
79 - 70% C 20% of Laboratory Average
69 - below D 20% of In-class Exam Average
15% of
Semester Exam
5% for Preparedness
SPECIAL NOTE:
A STUDENT MUST HAVE A PASSING GRADE FOR THE LAB COMPONENT TO PASS THE CLASS
Laboratory Reports: Laboratory reports must be
neatly typed or hand written. Molecular structures may be hand drawn. Each
laboratory report is due 1 week after the experiment was completed. The
components of the laboratory report are listed below. A separate page does not
have to be used for each item, several items may be
combined onto one page.
1) Cover sheet: your name, partner's
name, experiment name, and date when experiment was performed
2) Answers to Pre-Laboratory
questions showing all calculations.
3) A purpose: 1 to 2 sentences
clearly defining what the student is to attempting to accomplish.
4) A balanced chemical reaction (if
appropriate) with the names of the compounds in the reaction.
5) Procedure: very brief, no more
than 1 paragraph. Specific details do not have to be given.
6) Data section: recorded
information, tabulate if not already done so on the
laboratory handout.
7) Calculations: shown for all
computations.
8) Results: quantitative or
qualitative results (calculations). Tabulate if appropriate.
9) Conclusions: Were you successful?
Why or why not? Comparison to accepted results, %error.
Suggest improvements in your technique or laboratory procedure. Sources of errors.
10) Answers to Post-Laboratory questions if
applicable.
QUIZ DATES: EACH FRIDAY EXAM DATES: (9/7) (10/3)
(10/24)
