Special projects are intense
30-hour winter courses taught during the week preceding the spring semester.
Special Project 2008-2009:
Prior Special Projects:
- The Fourth Dimension.
This course has been taught three of the past five years. It covers the mathematics and physics of
extra dimensions, including how to draw the fourth and higher dimensions,
higher-dimensional geometry, generalizing physics formulae to the fourth
dimension, introduction to elementary particles, experimental searches for
extra dimensions in our universe, and key features of superstring theory.
- Mathematical Methods in Physics. This course focuses on advanced techniques
of mathematics and their application in physics. It covers coordinate systems,
transformations, tensors, matrix methods, special functions, complex
numbers, complex functions, and additional topics from mathematical
physics.
- Introduction to Particle Physics. This course serves a rigorous, highly
mathematical introduction to the physics of elementary particles and the
fundamental forces, culminating in solving the Dirac equation, learning
the Feynman rules, and computing cross sections and decays.
