Course Content
This course will concentrate on
readings in Russian Literature, primarily stories by Gogol, Turgenev and
Chekhov, as well as excerpts from various works by Solzhenitsyn. Each assigned reading will be summarized in a
brief essay, written in Russian, to be presented at the beginning of each class
meeting. Classroom activities will be
centered on discussion of assigned readings in their sociological and
historical contexts. All classroom
discussions will be in Russian.
Course Requirements and Grading
Daily assignments and class
participation will count for one-third of the semester grade. Three examinations per semester (in the weeks
of 10 Sep, 15 Oct, 12 Nov, 14 Jan, 18 Feb, 31 Mar) will count for a third of
the grade. A final exam will count for a
third of the semester grade.
A=90%-100%
B=80%-89% C=70%-79% D=below 70%
Attendance
The attendance policy as
specified in the Academic Handbook applies here. Additionally, any work missed as a result of
an unexcused absence or tardiness will receive a grade of “0.”
