COURSE CONTENT

This introductory course will concentrate upon building a basic vocabulary and acquiring a fundamental knowledge of Russian grammar. In so doing, we will practice the four language skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. Classroom activities will include language drills, dictation, translation exercises, language games and simple conversations. However, since language transcends the somewhat abstract notions of grammar and syntax, and because language is an integral part of culture, the Thursday class session will be devoted to various aspects of Russian culture: history, geography, art, etc.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Homework assignments, consisting of written work and/or memorization of vocabulary, must be completed by the next class meeting. Assignments turned in late will not be accepted, except in the case of an excused absence. Active class participation, especially with regard to oral exercises, is absolutely essential for the attainment of language proficiency.

GRADING

Daily homework assignments, quizzes, dictation and active class participation will count for one-third of the semester grade.  Examinations, given in the weeks of 15 Sep., 13 Oct., 3 Nov., 12 Jan., 9 Feb., 23 Mar., will count for one-third of the semester grade. The final examination will count for one-third of the semester grade. The two semester grades will then be averaged for the course grade. All exams are cumulative.
A=90%-100% B=80%-89% C=70%-79% D=below 70%

ATTENDANCE

The attendance policy as specified in the Academic Handbook applies here. Additionally, any work missed as a result of unexcused absence or unexcused tardiness will receive a grade of "0."
