FINE ARTS SURVEY (FA 102)

Spring 2009

COURSE CONTENT;

 

This course will address various epochs of Western culture in a chronological manner and will seek to identify the critical standards by which aesthetics and works of art were judged during these periods.  Our focus will be upon Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, the 20th Century and contemporary art.  We will address the architecture, visual arts, theater, music, and the aesthetic philosophy prevalent in each of these periods.

 

GRADING;

 

Three exams (on 5 February, 10 March and 2 April) will count for a third of the grade.  Material for theses exams will be taken from the textbook and from class lectures.  A term paper on an assigned topic will count for a third of the grade.  This paper will be due on 7 April, and it will be presented orally before it is turned in.  A late penalty of 10 points per class day will be assessed.  A comprehensive final exam will count for a third of the grade.

A=90%-100%   B=80%-89%   C=70%-79%   D=below 70%

 

ATTENDANCE

 

The attendance policy as specified in the Academic Handbook applies here.  Additionally, any exam missed as a result of an unexcused absence will receive a grade of “0.”  Each unexcused absence will be assessed a 5-point deduction from the semester grade, and each unexcused tardy will be assessed a 2-point deduction from the semester grade.  Students must bring their textbook to every class period.
